MISSION

The Department of Pathology is committed to serve:

  1. Current and future potential health care providers i.e. the medical students, the paramedics and bio-medical scientists, by providing opportunities to learn using the recent most and innovative educational methods in a supportive environment.
  2. Patients, by providing diagnostic services with laboratory medicine and modern pathology of the highest quality.
  3. Society, by using scientific discovery to develop a better understanding of human disease and managing it accordingly.
  4. To lay down firm bases and providing an environment and culture that supports continuous professional growth, by research.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims of the teaching in Pathology are to provide students with the opportunity for detailed study of various aspects of pathology, to provide a stimulating and challenging learning environment where teaching is informed and enhanced by research, and to provide training in scientific principles and experience in the evaluation and practice of research.

The aim is to build on the earlier experience of basic principles of disease in order to understand specific diseases as they affect the major body systems. Pathology forms part of the First, Second and Third MBBS Professional examination.

Program objectives are:

  1. To enhance the student’s technical competence in the area of study
  2. To develop an approach to research procedures and understand the importance of properly defining research problems
  3. To provide a working background in scientific writing and data management
  4. To increase the student’s awareness and knowledge of new laboratory-related technologies; and
  5. To prepare the student for continuation into an appropriate Postgraduate program, if desired.
INTRODUCTION

Pathology is the scientific study of the nature of disease, its causes, processes, development, and consequences.

Pathology as a Field and Discipline

  • It is placed at the intersection of clinical medicine and basic biomedical sciences and thus its knowledge helps to bridge the gap between basic medical and clinical subjects.
  • Encompasses all of medicine and experimental biology.
  • Plays a key role in understanding of processes and diagnosis.
  • Aims to apply current knowledge and latest scientific methods/medical technology to study the disease processes, and its applications in diagnosis.
  • Long term goals are to improve the quality of health by supporting the clinician in appropriate management of patient at all levels.

The Department of Pathology WMC

Wah Medical College was established in 2003. It is a part of composite Medical Education Program, undertaken between POF Welfare Trust and POF Board Wah Cantt. The college is affiliated with the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore / NUMS Rawalpindi and is recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC).

The Pathology department of the college was established on 30th September 2005, with the induction of Brig. (R) Dr. Ayaz Hussain Qureshi, as the Professor and Head of the Pathology Department. It has supplemented by other faculty members.

The existing Pathology lab of POF Hospital has been annexed to Department of Pathology which in future would be responsible for providing maximum and latest diagnostic support to almost every type of patients.

Teaching/Training in the Pathology Department is carried out by the 8 senior faculty members (Professors, Associate Professor and Assistant Professors) and 07 lecturers. Presently Department provides teaching in all four years of the undergraduate curriculum. Our educational and training programs presently include the teaching / training of undergraduate& post graduate (Microbiology) medical students but in future will also cater for the training into:

  1. Various sub specialties of Pathology Residency
  2. Post graduation into
    1. DCP
    2. MCPS
  • M. Phil
  1. FCPS – Part II
  1. It would also cater for training of medical technologist.

Teaching Aids

  1. Department houses a museum. The museum is certainly going to play a substantial role in enriching the knowledge of all the users. With the passage of time more and more specimens will be added to augment its resource capacity. Presently it is equipped with the following,
    1. A diverse collection of over one hundred Fifty pathological specimens,
    2. Mounted histological photographs of important pathological lesions,
    3. Artistic charts

Student’s Laboratory

  1. Student’s laboratory has sufficient space with basic facilities to

accommodate about thirty-five students at a time. It is well equipped with the following latest / modern electronic teaching aids like

  1. Multi Head Microscope (for five persons)
  2. CCD TV Camera Microscope with LED monitor.
  3. Laboratory has thirty Binocular Microscopes for students

 

  1. More than five hundred histopathological slides of all the important

pathological lesions. List of equipment, museum specimens and histopathological slides is attached as annexure.

Our office staff is the backbone of the department. They are highly dependable, energetic, well trained and qualified. Computer literate clerk is proving his worth through sheer hard work by providing commendable backup support to all the academic and allied activities of the department.
